Lotus Festival – Baihe, Tainan, Taiwan

Two weeks after we left with wonderful memories, Taiwan was slammed by typhoon Morakot. Although it was not the most powerful storm to hit the country, the torrential rain (2000+mm/2 days!! in some areas) it brought was the most destructive and devastating. Bridges and roads were washed away, villages were covered by mudslide, homes were swept away, human lives were lost and hundred more are still unaccounted for. Our thoughts go out to the folks in Taiwan. We pray for those who have lost their lives, families who have lost their loved ones and all those who have suffered from this disaster.

When I was planning for our trip to Taiwan, I’d put Baihe (White River) on top of my list. According to their official website, it appears that the whole town has nothing to offer except lotus and water lilies. As a matter of fact, they have a lot to offer. I had been taking lotus pictures in Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo, I was hoping that the culturing settings and the varieties of lotus in Baihe would be different from those of Japan.

For the last few years, I have been taking pictures of lotus in a more traditional aesthetic way, i.e. to show their utmost beauty in the traditional way.  I had some luck in Osaka, a few of the lotus flowers taken there are considered to be good. However,  I am no longer satisfied with that format. I have been thinking about a new approach, a new strategy; perhaps a more non-conventional way. I still want to record their beauty, but not in a cookie-cutter way. Unfortunately, I did not get my answer in Baihe. A week later in Taipei Botanical Garden, again, while I was taking pictures of lotus and lily, I’d realized that what I really needed was time to sit down in front of them, without a camera, without a sketch book, just using my heart to see them, to feel them and perhaps talk to them, asking which side of the face they prefer to show. The problem has been: I am always in a rush. I use my eyes, my fingers and my camera, and seldom my heart.

I am beginning to grow them, yes, you heard me right. I believe I have succeed in the first step towards the germination of seeds. If it works, I’ll document the whole process with my next batch of seeds. I am hoping to grow them, so I can put my heart into it (just like the good old days of being an entomologist, well,  a lepidopterist, to be exact).

Although it is called Baihe Lotus festival, however, I don’t believe if there were any parade or big activities. They may have something on the weekends for kids.

Lotus meal

We went to Baihe on a Tuesday to avoid the “madding crowd”. There was no traffic at all, very pleasant. However, by the same token, there was a little problem at lunch time. Quite a few of the restaurants took Tuesday off. We spent quite a while on the streets before settling in a restaurant. It was a huge restaurant, it had room enough for an army, but there were only a handful of guests in the restaurant. Anyway, who would expect anything special on a quiet weekday afternoon? I was thinking settling for a bowl of noodle soup. When we were offered a mini lotus banquet, we were skeptical. But when we were told that the banquet could be served in minutes. Unanimously we voted yes. It turned out to be surprising good. It was totally different from the Taiwanese cuisine I had known three decades ago. It was pleasantly refreshing. What a treat!

These are the "cut flower" in the restaurant. The yellow one later turned into our tea.

These are the “cut flowers” in the restaurant. The yellow one was later turned into our tea. The taste was only neutral.

Pickled lotus root and stem in the center; the little hors d’ouvres on the side was very good,  pleasant to the eyes and taste buds as well.

2

Steamed rice with lotus seeds wrapped in fresh lotus leaf. Everything that is cooked wrapped in lotus leaf has a special fragrant, this rice was no exception.

Lily Tea

soup

Seafood broth with lotus stem. The small pieces of cross-sectioned stem did enhance the flavor, very refreshing.

13001

Steamed pork spare ribs wrapped in lotus leaves. It was actually something commonly known as shank. Shank has deep flavor but tough, steaming for extended time turned it into a tasty yet tender delicacy.

1304

Lotus fresh roll + steamed sea bass in lotus leaf. I have no recollection of what the fresh roll exactly was, it surely was pleasant to the eyes. The steamed bass was delicious.

1306

Chicken soup with lotus stigmata. I couldn’t tell where was the sophisticated taste came from, probably something other than the lotus stigma.

1309

Sweet dumpling with lotus seeds, just the usual stuff.
