CHIHULY – Through the Looking Glass

I must confess that I know nothing about glass, not to mention art made with this fragile and magical material. I have seen some beautiful small glass works in museums, but nothing like those in the Chihuly exhibition. To us, it was an eye-opening experience, in terms of magnitude, complexity and installation. It is indeed a world of fantasy.

The 42 feet tall Lime Green Icicle Tower.

It took days for the Chihuly team to put this tower together.

Persian Ceiling – I am posting some HDR photos here to show the Persian ceiling. The light passing through different objects on the ceiling showed different intensity due to thickness, color and shape of the objects. A human eye is fine with this situation because we are capable of adjusting to light intensity continuously and, on the other hand, a single shot seems unlikely to do the justice to reflect the true beauty. However, by using HDR, I may have twisted  Chihuly’s original intention. Anyway, please click on the photos to see a larger version which I believe is much better.

    Hello John,
Sorry for the long silence – I have been busy. I am pleased to see you went to see Chihuly. I was so amazed by the exhibit, I went back a second time. The intricate nature of his pieces is breathtaking! Your shots are wonderful, especially the closeups of the Persian ceiling and the Mille Fiori. We also saw his work when we went to the Pacific Northwest for vacation a few years ago. We need to get together. I went on three vacations this summer and they all were phenomenal. I got some great pictures, especially in Peru.

Sorry for the late reply. Just got back from a month long trip to Asia, trying hard to recover from the worst jet lag (12-hr jet lag is a day and night difference!). The weather was steamy hot there, and I had to carry >15lbs gears. We were able to cover Bangkok, Sukhothai (beautiful Buddha images), Chiang Mai (beautiful Buddhist temples everywhere), the Golden Triangle, Tha Ton and Mae Salong. Tha Ton and Mae Salong are towns situated on the hills very close to Burmese (Myanmar) border. No more poppy growing, instead, there are oolong tea and coffee. Hong Kong is not fun, just dim sum after dim sum. I am not sure if you will get this reply on email automatically. Anyway, I’ll send you one.
