Autumn in Kyoto (7)
Shisen-do was the first destination of the day we visited the famous north range of Higashiyama. As I have mentioned in my previous post, Enkouji, there are a number of temples in that area famous for their fall colors. The formal name for Shisen-do is Jozanji Temple (Outotsu-ka ?), it was established by Jozan Ishikawa, a Chinese Classic scholar, in 1641 as his hermitage. Ishikawa is considered a scholar of Chinese poem and clerical script (ancient, highly angular style of kanji, 隷書) and the founder of literati-tea drinking (文人茶 or sencha 煎茶).
The following is a panorama of the garden seen from Shisen-no-ma (詩仙の間) which is a room in the main hall where the portraits of thirty-six Chinese poets (photography was prohibited) are displayed. Shirakuso, 至楽巣(猟芸巣), the reading room is on the right.
↑↓ I can’t find any info about this building, not even on their official website. This is the building standing behind the main hall of Shisen-do, on the left to the exit leading to the garden. The building looks like a warehouse to me. The fall colors here were magnificent.
