Kyoto Station snapshots

Kyoto Station is a train station, but it is more than a station. Even though we didn’t stay in the vicinity, we used this facility a lot. Taking a train, of course, taking a bus, having something to eat and even  shopping. Kyoto station is not new to us, but we have never really taken the time to appreciate the beauty of its architecture and functionality. Anyway, here are a bunch of photos that I took on our way in and out of the premisses.

Wikipedia: Kyoto Station (京都駅 Kyoto-eki) is a major railway station and transportation hub in Kyoto, Japan. It has Japan’s second-largest station building (after Nagoya Station) and is one of the country’s largest buildings, incorporating a shopping mall, hotel, movie theater, Isetan department store, and several local government facilities under one 15-story roof. It also housed the Kyoto City Air Terminal until August 31, 2002.

Karasuma side (North)

Kyoto station is one of the major works of Japanese architect Hiroshi Hara (原 広司). According to Wikipedia, the slightly irregular cubic facade,as shown below, of plate glass over steel frame exhibits characteristics of futurism.

Going up a couple of flights by elevator on the west side, there is the open giant stair case (大階段 Daikaidan), from 4th floor one can walk up to the observation deck of the roof top (above 11th floor), elevator is another option.

One of the reasons we came to Kyoto Station very often during our stay in Kyoto was food. There are a lot of restaurants here, on 10th floor, the ramen (soup noodle) alley, on 11th floor, sushi, Italian, fried pork chop… As a matter of fact, we tried those two famous fried pork chop restaurants, they are good, but not as good as they say online.

In front of Kyoto Station, there is an underground shopping mall  “Porta” where you’ll find different kinds of cuisines to choose from. This is a famous udon restaurant.

Shopping and good food do not limited inside the station, the surrounding area is also a good place to explore.

↓ One night, when we were walking by the bus stops, out of the blue, there was a mini water show choreographed to music on the roof top of a one-storey building. It was not long, but the union of water, music and light did bring out the holiday spirit.
